A completely custom centre console designed for Nate Sharp's 1961 EK Holden Special restomod, built around the car's modified interior
rather than adapted from an off-the-shelf component.
With extensive modifications already made to the transmission tunnel and firewall, along with the conversion from the original bench seat to bucket seats, the interior provided an opportunity to design something specifically around the new configuration.
The interior sheet metal was 3D scanned and used as the foundation for the design. From there, the console was developed with flowing curves to complement the existing dashboard and the rounded styling of the EK.
The design incorporates integrated cup holders, shifter and handbrake surrounds, along with a dedicated switch pod for the billet headlight, wiper and start/stop switches.
The console was broken down into multiple sections for 3D printing, with more than 60 hours of printing across five 1kg spools of filament. The printed components were assembled using dowel pins and solvent bonding.
Aluminium billet shifter and handbrake surrounds were machined on a CNC, along with several concealed mounting brackets used to secure the console to the vehicle.
The result is a centre console designed specifically around the vehicle, integrating modern functionality while retaining the rounded styling of the original EK interior.
The completed console will be wrapped in leather by the upholsterer responsible for the rest of the interior, bringing the different materials and components together into the finished design.
